What if my card was lost or stolen?
During business hours, call our Member Service Centre at 1‑800‑616‑8878 or visit your nearest branch. After hours, call Everlink at 1‑888‑277‑1043, seven days a week.
What is the difference between an Interac Flash® debit card and a Debit Mastercard®?
While both options allow you to spend money directly from your chequing account, they operate on different payment networks and are used in slightly different situations.
Interac Debit (including Flash®) runs on Canada’s domestic payment network. It is the standard option for most in-person transactions within Canada — when you tap, insert, or swipe your card at a retail terminal, the transaction is typically processed through Interac.
Debit Mastercard®, on the other hand, operates on the global Mastercard network. It allows your debit card to be used not only across Canada but also internationally, as well as for online purchases wherever Mastercard is accepted. Most modern e-commerce websites prefer Debit Mastercard transactions, where you simply enter the 16-digit card number, expiry date, and the 3-digit security code (CVC) from the back of your card.
If you choose the FirstOntario Debit Mastercard®, it will display both the Interac and Mastercard logos. This means it is a co-badged card that can operate on both networks. Within Canada, in-store terminals usually default to the Interac network as the standard domestic option. When shopping online or travelling abroad, the Mastercard network is used to process your payments.
What if I’m not interested in a FirstOntario Debit Mastercard?
No problem at all. If you prefer not to have a Debit Mastercard®, you can choose a FirstOntario Interac Flash® debit card instead. This option is still available to all members.
Are there fees associated with having a Debit Mastercard?
All standard chequing account and transaction fees apply. Note that there are additional fees for using the card outside of country. Should a trace be required for a debit card transaction, the fee may be higher due to increased costs to investigate.
Do all online retailers accept Debit Mastercard?
Debit Mastercard is accepted by international and participating Canadian online merchants that accept Mastercard.
