Latest updates from FirstOntario

Message from our CEO, Lloyd Smith

For more than 80 years, FirstOntario has been helping Members get through the good times and the bad and now, as we face the challenges of COVID-19 – we’re going to get through this together.

Announcing new ways we’re helping our Members

FirstOntario Credit Union pledges to work with our Members during these difficult times and we are ready to support you. Members are encouraged to contact their branches to discuss options to help reduce their financial stress due to the impact of COVID-19. Some of the possible support available includes:

  • For our retail Members, we can work with you to defer up to six months of mortgage payments, and/or personal loan payments. Every situation is different so please talk to your branch to explore ways that we can help you.
  • For our business Members, please talk with your account manager and we can provide advice and support on various mortgage and/or loan payment deferral options on a case by case basis.

Ways to Bank at FirstOntario

You don’t have to visit a branch to discuss your options. Connect with our teams through our Member Solutions Centre at 1-800-616-8878 or 905-685-5555 and our Personal Assisted Tellers (PAT). PAT can help you with all the things a teller can do including cashing cheques, deposits, withdrawals, transferring funds and much more.

Our Member Solutions Centre and PAT are available through extended hours (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to help with your day-to-day banking needs.

We also strongly request that our Members take advantage of FirstOntario’s online and mobile banking services – which are available 24/7 – to do your banking from the comfort and convenience of your home.

Our branches also have ATMs available for your use. For our Members who may not be close to a branch, or even outside of the province, THE EXCHANGE Network gives you access to more than 3,700 ATMs across Canada, free of charge.

Precautionary Measures – Branch Closures

We temporarily closed six branches across our regions in addition to our two hospital locations. To increase our efforts to keep our Members and employees safe from the spread of COVID-19, beginning Saturday, April 25, all FirstOntario branches will be closed on Saturdays, until further notice.

For your reference, we’ve listed the branches that will remain open to serve Members and also noted the branches that are temporarily closed.

Branch Hour Changes

We have also decided to further reduce branch hours at FirstOntario locations.

9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday to Friday
Branches will be closed on Saturdays, beginning April 25.

FirstOntario is strong and your money is protected

Your deposits and investments up to $250,000 are automatically insured by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) if they are held outside a registered plan. That’s $150,000 more than the banks offer. Coverage is unlimited if the investment is registered (RRSP, RRIF, RESP or TFSA).

COVID-19 and fraud – be aware

The amount of news coverage surrounding COVID-19 has created new opportunity for criminals. Be on the lookout for phishing attacks that try to exploit public fears. Be aware of fraudulent emails that attempt to trick you into revealing your personal information or clicking on malicious links or attachments. Remember to never send personal and/or financial information by email.

Our community includes our Members and our employees

As far as business as usual at FirstOntario, we’re adapting every day. Our front line staff continue to be there for you, however we ask that whenever possible, you limit your interactions to phone calls or emails and all the other remote options outlined above in “Ways to Bank”. If you must visit a branch, please do so only if you are in good health and are not experiencing any symptoms. If you have travelled outside of the country or have been in contact with others who have, please call us instead – there’s lots of ways we can help.

We’re here to help

FirstOntario is committed to helping our Members through these challenging times. We will continue to offer the banking services you expect and the expert advice you need. We are strong, well-prepared and ready to support our Members.

I thank you for your continued support of FirstOntario. Like I said before, we will get through this together.

COVID-19 Update: Message from our CEO, Lloyd Smith – March 17, 2020

COVID-19: Message from our CEO, Lloyd Smith

March 17, 2020

FirstOntario is taking additional steps in response to the evolving situation caused by COVID-19 and the latest news and recommendations from public health and government agencies. The health and safety of FirstOntario employees, Members, our suppliers and our community are of primary importance.

Additional safeguarding measures

We remain committed to serving the needs of our Members through these uncertain times, and are implementing additional safeguarding measures. On Monday, March 16 we temporarily closed our locations in Oakville and Niagara hospitals and adjusted the hours of operation of our Lime Ridge Mall branch in Hamilton to align with the new mall hours.

Effective Wednesday March 18, we will be taking additional precautionary measures. We have made the decision reduce hours at FirstOntario locations. All branch hours will be reduced to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

There are many ways to manage your money

Our Member Solutions Centre and Personal Assisted Teller (PAT) offer extended hours of operation to enable you to complete the same types of transactions and receive the same services you would expect to receive in our branches.

Members can take advantage of these services Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ATMs are available for business as usual and we also encourage Members to take advantage of FirstOntario’s online and mobile banking services – which are available 24/7 – to do your banking from the comfort and convenience of your home.

Check your account balances and transaction history, send money, pay bills, deposit cheques and much more. If you haven’t set yourself up yet, it only takes a few minutes. Download the app and contact our Member Solutions Centre at 1-800-616-8878 during regular business hours to get started!

We also want to assure you that we've taken numerous precautions to keep our Members and employees safe, including deeper cleanings and additional sanitizer stations available at every branch. Your well‑being and the safety of our staff is our first priority.

If you are facing financial challenges because of COVID-19, contact us

We are here for our Members and understand that COVID-19 has created a lot of uncertainty. If you are experiencing financial difficulties we ask that you contact your local branch or our Member Solutions Centre at 1-800-616-8878 as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation and possible ways we can assist you.

COVID-19 is a problem for all of us. We need to all work together especially when it comes to people who are not feeling well and the more vulnerable people within our community. We need to do our part to protect ourselves and those around us.

We will share information and keep you informed

We will continue to monitor the situation and are committed to providing our Members with ongoing communication. Members are encouraged to check our website FirstOntario.com for regular updates. Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to adapt to the evolving situation to ensure we are safeguarding and protecting the wellbeing of everyone. We are here for you should you have any questions or concerns.
