Raising Awareness of Homelessness

FirstOntario believes it is important to care for everyone in our community.

On any given night in Canada, there are 35,000 people who are living homeless or unhoused, and the communities FirstOntario serves are not immune to the impact of homelessness.

We are committed to raising awareness and working to help find solutions to address this form of poverty and the factors that contribute to it - financial insecurity, a lack of affordable housing, mental health, and social factors such as violence, abuse, and social network alienation.

This is why we supported the Sleepless in our Cities United Way Halton & Hamilton event in February 2021. Our CEO Lloyd Smith, along with other community leaders slept in their cars to raise dollars and awareness about the daily challenges faced by youth and adults living in poverty. Lloyd’s participation raised over $11,000 towards the agency’s goal of fundraising more than $75,000.

The money raised enables United Way Halton & Hamilton to invest into direct housing supports that provide shelter, programming to those living in residential situations, or assistance to maintain current housing.
